Dump Lokpal bill for Jan Lokpal bill: Shatrughan Sinha to UPA

NEW DELHI: Supporting the anti-corruption campaign of Anna Hazare, BJP leader Shatrughan Sinha today asked the government to dump the "toothless" Lokpal bill in favour of Jan Lokpal bill and backed L K Advani's demand for resignation of the Prime Minister.

"People across the country are rightly describing the 'sarkari' Lokpal bill as jokepal bill...the bill is toothless as it keeps the Prime Minister out of its ambit and provides no no effective remedy against corruption at the higher level," Sinha told PTI over phone from Ranchi.

Sinha, whose house was thronged by Hazare supporters in his Parliamentary constituency Patna yesterday to thank him for taking an "open" stand in favour of Jan Lokpal bill, said the UPA government should show its commitment to fight corruption and honour the demand of the common man.

"UPA government should see the writing on the wall and table Jan Lokpal bill in Parliament for wider discussion," Sinha, who served as Union Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, said.

"Time is running out for the UPA government...it can not afford to ignore the sentiment of masses," the BJP star campaigner said.

Sinha also backed Advani's demand that the Prime Minister should quit and hold fresh elections.

"Advaniji has rightly demanded resignation of the Prime Minister as he has been proved ineffective to check price rise or take a strong action against corruption," he said.
