Police on high alert for Advani’s rally

After Baba Ramdev and Anna Hazare, it is BJP leader LK Advani’s turn to visit Ramlila Maidan to conclude his Rath Yatra. After the discovery of a bomb on the route of the yatra in Tamil Nadu, police have begun reviewing security arrangements to be put in place in and around the ground.

“The organisers have been issued a No-Objection Certificate for the rally on November 20. Since it is a Sunday, we are expecting a huge crowd. Senior BJP leaders are expected to attend the rally,” a senior police officer of the central district said.

The Intelligence Bureau has already issued an alert. So, the Delhi Police have plans to deploy 100 commandos in and around the venue. “We have asked the organisers to install Door Frame Metal Detectors, Hand Held Metal Detectors and baggage scanners. They will also install CCTVs in and around the ground and set up a control room inside the venue,” the officer said.

The control room will be manned by police personnel. Also, cops in civil clothes will be deployed. “Generally, we require 1,000 personnel to secure the venue but for this rally, we are planning to call six extra companies (around 400 policemen),” the officer added.

There will be a separate gate for the VVIPs. Moreover, an emergency exit will be put in place near that gate in case of a crisis. The visitors will be allowed to enter from three gates.

“We have learnt a lot from the past two rallies at Ramlila Ground. After what happened at Ramdev’s rally, people had raised several questions about our ability. But Anna’s protest was an example of maintaining law and order without the use of force. In Advani’s rally, our focus would be on the security of VVIPs and visitors,” the officer said.
