Supporters in Assam breathe easy, but keep fingers crossed

GUWAHATI: The news of Parliament unanimously passing the resolution on three issues raised by Anna Hazare brought in a sense of victory, satisfaction and relief among the veteran Gandhian's supporters in this northeastern state on Saturday.

Most of them - worried about the activist's health - were at last relived to learn that the anti-corruption crusader would call off his fast on Sunday. At the same time, they termed the acceptance of resolution in Parliament "as only a small step towards forming an effective anti-corruption legislation".

Pranjal Bordoloi, general secretary of the Assam branch of India Against Corruption (IAC), said, "We are relieved that the Lok Sabha has unanimously passed the resolution on the three issues raised by Hazare for inclusion in the Lokpal Bill. But this is only a small step towards the big battle that lies ahead."

He added, "The crusade is to free the country from corruption. And Hazare's wishes will be fulfiled only when we see enactment of a strong and effective legislation to fight corruption. We will keep a close watch over how the government moves ahead with forming the legislation."

Singer-turned-peace activist Kishore Giri, expressed his happiness over the day's development, but said the house should have done it much earlier. "Parliament had to pass the resolution unanimously as all the dilly dally tactics started backfiring upon the government and the politicians as Anna went on with his fast. Though it's late, I am happy that Anna will break his fast on Sunday."

Members of the Assam branch of IAC has been on a relay hunger strike since August 16 when Anna launched his fast. The protest at the NCP office ground in Dighalipukhri saw spontaneous support pouring in from various quarters of life.
