Many lawyers defy boycott call

KANPUR: Many lawyers defied the boycott call given by the bar association on Thursday and appeared in the court in post-lunch session to get the urgent work of their clients done. A few agitating lawyers tried to stop them. However, presence of heavy police force prevented the situation by getting ugly.

The boycott of courts started on August 16 when social activist Anna Hazare went on a fast in support of Jan Lokpal Bill. His arrest incited the lawyers and they boycotted the court for three days. Thereafter, the men-in-black coat decided to abstain from judicial work for one reason or the other.

According to records of Kanpur Bar Association, the courts will remain closed till September 11. From August 16 to September 11, lawyers to just work for four days out of 26. Four Sundays, one second Saturday and Janmashtami and Eid holidays also fell in the intervening period.

A lawyer who defied the boycott call, said that many of his colleagues are facing severe financial crisis. "We all go back home empty-handed. How long could we continue in that manner? Therefore, we decided to appear in the court and earn some money to meet our expenses," he added.

KBA general secretary Anoop Kumar Dwivedi said that he is aware of the problems faced by his colleagues. Therefore, he had allowed some lawyers to appear in the court and execute urgent matters. No action will be taken against them. The lawyers would resume judicial work from September 12.
