Support grows for Anna's stir against graft


VARANASI: While the discussion on Jan Lokpal Bill was on in the parliament on Saturday, the local natives from all sections of society organised a series of protests to express their solidarity with Anna Hazare's anti-corruption agitation.

The Akhil Bharatiya Udyog Vyapar Mandal has given a call for 'Kashi bandh' on August 29 in support of Anna's campaign. The people associated with Varanasi Vikas Samiti have extended their support to the proposed bandh call.

On Saturday, the medical professionals under the banner of Indian Medical Association (IMA) assembled near Shaheed Udyan in Sigra area in the early morning.

Wearing aprons, masks and holding black flags, the medicos carried out a silent procession from Shaheed Udyan to Bharat Mata Temple in protest against the apathetic attitude of Central government on the issue of corruption.

The city witnessed processions, rallies and formation of human chains in support of Anna Hazare. Schoolchildren also came out in large numbers to join the movement.

While the dharna, being organised by the volunteers of India Against Corruption continued at the district headquarters on Saturday, the students from different schools and colleges also came on the streets to join the agitation by forming human chains.

The students of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) formed a human chain in Lanka area. Besides, protest rallies and demonstrations were also organised by people in small groups in most parts of the city.

The traders associated with Bhojubir Vyapar Mandal, Orderly Bazaar Vyapar Mandal and Bhelupur Vyapar Mandal also staged a demonstration and carried out a procession in support of Anna.
