Team Anna on the defensive, says nothing against Congress

Team Anna Hazare activist Arvind Kejriwal on Monday toned down the all-out campaign against the Congress a little, saying they had no problem with the Congress if parliament passes the Jan Lokpal bill. Addressing a public meeting in Adampur town of Hisar Lok Sabha constituency on Monday, Kejriwal said that the campaign against the Congress party was only till an effective Lokpal bill was passed.

"We have nothing against the Congress if its government passes the Jan Lokpal bill to curb corruption in the country. If that happens, we will not ask anyone to vote against the Congress," he told the gathering.

He clarified that Team Anna was not asking voters to vote for any particular party or candidate.

"If due to the (Team Anna) campaign, a corrupt person gets elected to parliament, the Jan Lokpal bill will ensure that proper action is taken against him," Kejriwal said.

Kejriwal was Monday accompanied by former police officer Kiran Bedi and Anna Hazare’s associate Manish Sisodia. They addressed gatherings in Adampur, Barwala and a few other places.

The Hissar seat fell vacant in June following the death of Bhajan Lal, a three-time chief minister of Haryana infamous for engineering political defections, who had won the seat in May 2009.

The contest for the seat is tough for the three main players -- Kuldeep Bishnoi of the Haryana Janhit Congress, who is son of the late Bhajan Lal; Indian National Lok Dal’s Ajay Chautala, who is son of former chief minister Om Prakash Chautala; and three-time former MP Jai Prakash of the Congress. Bishnoi has the support of the BJP for this election.

The by-election takes place Oct 13 and the result will be out Oct 17.
