Dharna organised in support of Anna Hazare

Volunteers of Adhikar Manch - Swarnim Gujarat and India Against Corruption held a dharna at Gandhi Baug near Mahatma Gandhi's statue here on Tuesday in support of social activist Anna Hazare, who has begun his fast-unto-death in New Delhi to demand enactment of a comprehensive Jan Lokpal Bill.

Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Rajkot were among the 500 cities in the country to join the movement demanding the enactment of the Bill. Dharnas were held at many places and processions taken out.

A school teacher and an RTI activist Deepak Patel said, "We are on dharna. Our movement will continue till the government accepts our demand. Lokpal Bill is important to check corruption at higher levels in the government."

"A motorcycle rally from Dandi in Navsari to Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad is being planned in the coming days. It is a non-political movement," Patel added.

A finance agent Bhupendra Shah, who also took part in the dharna, said, "I am here to support Anna Hazare. If the government does not take any action within five days, we will all go on an indefinite fast."

Gulam Memon, also a protestor, said, "Most of the government officials and politicians manage to escape from corruption charges. The guilty among them must be adequately punished. The office of the Lokpal can probe corruption charges against politicians and bureaucrats holding senior positions in the government."

Raju Thakkar of Akashmat Nivaran Kendra said, "Our dharna was to spread awareness about the movement among the people. We expect huge support from people to Anna Hazare".
