In poll mode, Amarinder urges youth to usher in change

Harassment of Congress workers at the hands of ruling SAD-BJP combine, falling profits in agriculture and depleting industrial growth dominated the interaction between Captain Amarinder Singh, president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, and the youth organised by National Students Union of India on Wednesday.

On Anna Hazare’s call for defeating Congress in case it failed to pass the Lokpal Bill, Amarinder said, “Let Anna Hazare come to Punjab and he will call for a defeat of SAD(B) after he sees the corruption that the present regime has indulged in.”

When asked about the fate of the scams indicting the SAD (B) that his party was trying to bring to light, he said, “All I can assure is that all these scams—whether it is the issue of transport policy and its benefits or the Fastway channel, and even more such scams that will come to light soon—will be probed when we come to power and the guilty will surely be punished.”

He said it was “just a warm up exercise” and there was more to come.

Amarinder said the Congress while coming out with a positive agenda was also exposing the government on corruption, misgovernance, lawlessness, political victimisation and economic failure.

The PCC president assured the gathering, which was male-dominated with female cadre conspicuous by their absence, that his party was giving additional emphasis to youth-oriented policies and promised them that the youth will get due representation in the elections as the party president Sonia Gandhi was keen to bring forward youth and women.

He asked them to ensure that they enroll themselves in the electoral rolls and participate in the democratic and electoral process.

“You are my army which will usher in change in Punjab,” he said .

Spelling out his agenda, he said Punjab needs to change its policies and programmes. He said while agriculture was of prime importance, industry was very important as it not only generates employment but also revenue.
