News channels ride on Anna fast to drive up viewership


New Delhi: The good spell of increased viewers for news broadcasters continued for the second straight week ended 27 August as Anna Hazare’s fast and campaign against corruption reached a crescendo.

The market share of all news channels rose as much as 1.15 percentage points to touch 15.01% of total TV viewership compared with the preceding week, TAM Media Research said on Wednesday.

The average daily time spent by viewers on news channels moved further up by 7% over the previous week to touch 24.5 minutes. In the preceding week, the 34th in calendar 2011, the average daily time had doubled from 15 minutes to 22.7 minutes sequentially.

With 83.4% share, Hazare and his campaign for a stronger ombudsman law was the No. 1 story reported by top 10 English and Hindi news channels last week, according to TAM’s News Content Track, that looks at the top weekly stories reported by these channels. The India-England Test series came a distant second with 2.4% share of the coverage on news channels. Hazare ended his fast on Sunday after Parliament agreed to consider his proposals. Hindi news channels, which had a market share of 11.02% in the week ended 20 August, increased their share to reach 12.33%. The genre has almost doubled its share from 5.9% in the first week of Hazare’s agitation.

Aaj Tak retained pole position at 17.9% channel share and Star News followed at 17.6%. Meanwhile, ‘PTI’ news agency reported that Hazare was discharged from a hospital in Gurgaon on Wednesday evening where he was admitted on Sunday after he broke his fast.“Anna will return to Ralegan Siddhi tomorrow,” Shyam Asawa, Hazare’s associate said.
