The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP alliance also organised protests and rallies at the district headquarters across the state. The leaders spearheading dharnas sent memorandum to the President through respective deputy commissioners. They demanded immediate dismissal of the UPA government.
Reacting to the dharnas by Akalis, the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh said that Anna Hazare would be ashamed of Akalis supporting his movement since the party was supporting corruption in the state. Akalis were mired neck deep in corruption. The PCC President said that it was understandable that people were fed up with the corruption prevailing in different walks of life and people were identifying themselves with him. But Anna's approach was not right. He pointed out, only Parliament had the authority to legislate and make laws.
The students from different educational institutions in Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana came forward to articulate their support for Hazare. They also held car and bike rallies, formed human chains and took out peaceful marches. The attendance was also thin at institutes including Panjab University Chandigarh, Punjabi University Patiala, Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar Maharishi Dayanand University at Rohtak. Some NGOs also took out processions in support of Hazare. A few organisations stated that they would send volunteers to Ramlila Maidan for holding protests.
