Corruption has become way of life: Jaitley in Rajya Sabha

The massive support for Anna Hazare was a "loud and clear" message that people were unhappy with the present dispensation, Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley said in the Rajya Sabha on Saturday.

As the Upper House took up the debate on the Lokpal Bill, Jaitley said: "The message is loud and clear, people are not ready to accept the present status quo. Corruption in many areas has become a way of life."

The Rajya Sabha took up the debate at around noon, about an hour after the Lok Sabha begun the discussion to resolve the logjam over the Lokpal Bill following a fast by Hazare, which entered its twelfth day on Saturday.

The BJP MP said the upper sections of the society "bend the rules" and indulged in corruption, while the common people suffered. There were low areas of society where the average man had to confront corruption as a way of life, he said.

Without mentioning the recent mockery made by some civil society members, Jaitley said some not so complementary statements were being made about Parliament and its members. He however urged the MPs not to pay attention to them.
