AIZWAL: Eleven anti-corruption organizations, including People's Right to Information and Development Implementation Society of Mizoram (PRISM) and Society for Social Action (SOSA), on Thursday organized a rally in Aizawl under the banner of Mizoram Against Corruption in support of social activist Anna Hazare's movement.
The participants of the rally raised slogans like "corruption is the enemy of the nation" and "we need a government that dares to combat corruption" in front of Vanapa Hall. SL Sailova, the president of SOSA, said Parliament failed to enact the Lokpal Bill for 42 years while the members of Parliament, cutting across party lines, easily passed bills to enhance their pay and perks many times during the same period.
"Parliament failed to legislate Lokpal as its members, who are the most powerful people in the country, did not want to be restricted and be arrested on graft cases," added Sailova.
Emphasising the need for Lokayukta in Mizoram, he said the state anti-corruption bureau is helpless to prosecute the chief minister and chief secretary, who are vigilance minister and state chief vigilance officer respectively, and all corrupt politicians and bureaucrats could not be punished if the chief minister and the chief secretary decided to shield them.
Earlier, in another meeting convened by former IAS officer M Lalmanzuala and journalists, the participants said only Jan Lokpal in the Centre and Lokayukta in the states can change the political system to enable the corrupt people to be punished in accordance with the law of the land.
Lalmanzuala said corruption could only be uprooted with a change in the system and politicians refused to change as hundreds of MPs would be arrested if the Lokpal comes into being. Bualhranga, a veteran anti-corruption activist, said,
"Even if we have safeguards against assimilation, a morally bankrupt society would sooner or later perish." He added that he saw a silver lining after the massive protest in Delhi and other parts of the country spearheaded by Team Anna. Former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer F Lalremsiama said the people of India and Mizoram were exasperated by rampant corruption and the need of the hour was an independent investigating agency like the Lokpal and the Lokayukta in the states.
