New Delhi: The Assembly elections in five states including the politically crucial Uttar Pradesh and Punjab are likely to be held in February. The other states which will be holding Assembly elections are Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa.
Uttar Pradesh is likely to see elections in five phases and the entire process will be completed within one month as school and college examinations start from March.
The elections are the first since the anti-corruption agitation of Anna Hazare started to target the ruling Congress-led United Progressive Alliance directly.
Hazare has already said that he and his associated will campaign against the Congress party if the Government fails to get a strong Lokpal Bill passed in Parliament in the winter session.
Congress has been hoping of putting up a good show in Uttar Pradesh where it has been out of power for over two decades. Congress General Secretary and Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi has been hoping to capitalise on his party's surprisingly good show during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections and trying to revive his party in the state.
