Panaji: The Lokpal legislation will not put an end to corruption, says former Mumbai police commissioner Julio F Ribeiro.
The former tough talking supercop, who was speaking at a debate late Thursday on corruption in Goa, said several measures were needed if the menace of corruption was to be addressed at the grassroots.
"Corruption will not end with the Lokpal," Ribeiro said.
"Corruption affects the poorest of the poor sections of society the most and that is where we have to focus our attention if we are to rid us of this menace," said the former cop turned civil society activist.
He credited veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare for creating an environment in India against corruption, but rued the fact that a "tactical blunder" of campaigning in the Hisar by-election could derail the movement.
"Anna Hazare has charged the whole country with his movement which had given hope to people. Unfortunately, a tactical blunder like campaigning in the Hisar by-election has created problems," Ribeiro said.
He was referring to Team Anna campaigning against the Congress in the Hisar parliamentary by-election.
