Anna supporters land in Dubai jail

Supporting Anna Hazare has cost five NRIs their Eid and has earned them a 16-day stay in Dubai prison.

Their friends and family members are now waiting for September 3 when the Eid holidays will be over and they will be produced in the court.

On August 20 Rajesh Daryani (35) and four others were arrested by the Dubai police for organising a protest march at Al Mamzar Beach Park, Dubai to support Anna’s movement against corruption.

“Daryani had put up a post on his wall that those who want to support Hazare can join him at the park at 8.30 pm on August 20,” says his friend Gopinath Selvaraj (25) who is from Chennai and is works in Dubai for the last two years as a purchase co-ordinator in a private firm.

“We all are a member of a runner’s club Dubai’s Creek Striders and decided to come together that day. Sadly I could not reach the venue on time,” he says.

This wall-post on Facebook gathered 150 people at the Park. “Seeing such a huge gathering the cops came to enquire what was happening and the crowd dispersed. They took away Daryani and four others to question them and later arrested them,” he said.

Since then the five of them have been languishing in the Dubai prison. On August 27 they were presented before the Dubai court but their bail application was rejected.

“Now they cannot be out till September 3 as Eid holidays are on. We have hired a lawyer and Indian consulate is also trying to help us in this matter to get them out,” he said.
