Sena extends support to Hazare’s anti-graft movement

MUMBAI/PUNE: The Shiv Sena chief on Friday deputed his grandson Aditya Thackeray, son of Sena working President Uddhav Thackeray to New Delhi with a message to anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare, who is on a fast for the 11th day to eradicate corruption.

Speaking to the media on his return to Mumbai, Aditya said the Sena chief had conveyed to Anna the total support of the Sena to the anti-graft bill and Anna’s movement for his demand for a strong and competent Lokpal Bill.

“I met Anna and conveyed him my grandfather’s message which stated that the entire Sena family was behind Anna in his fight against corruption and demand for a strong Lokpal Bill. I told Anna that that beside the Sena family, each and every Marathi person was behind his movement and that we support his agitation against corruption. We are concerned about his health and feel and also appeal to him to end his indefinite fast. The country is in need of a rigid anti-graft law and the earlier it is implemented the better it is for the country,” Thackeray said.

Aditya said that Anna also spoke on his cell phone with his grandfather Bal Thackeray for some time. “It is time that the people of the country rally together and support Anna in his fight against corruption. The situation now is now or never and we should not miss this opportunity,” he added

While on one hand Thackeray talked about extending support to Anna and appealing him to end his fast stating that his life was most precious for the country, Thackeray at his usual witty style did not spare the members of Team Anna. Referring to the three members Kiran Bedi, Prashant Bhushan and Arvind Kejriwal, who are negotiating with the government, Thackeray referred to them as ‘three idiots.’

Thackeray appealed to Anna to end his fast and instead let the ‘three idiots’ now take his place and go on an indefinite fast for the anti-graft bill.

Meanwhile in Pune, about 200 activists of Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption organization protested outside Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo and federal agriculture minister Sharad Pawar’s residence in Baramati on Friday. The protestors sang Hindu religious songs and reiterated that the agitation will go on as long as Anna’s fast continues.

Students from schools and colleges in Baramati also talked in a rally to support Anna. Slogans were raised in support of the Lokpal bill.

In a development, three Members of the Parliament from Pune and Ahmednagar flew to New Delhi on Thursday evening and met Anna on Friday morning. The MP’s Dilip Gandhi from Ahmednagar, Bhausaheb Wakchaure from Shirdi and Shivaji Adhalrao Patil from Shirur.

Speaking to Arab News from Delhi, Dilip Gandhi said that they spoke with Anna and extended their support to his movement. They told Anna that they would pursue the issue in Parliament and urged him to break his fast. Gandhi was compelled to meet Anna after residents of Anna’s village Ralegan Siddhi had protested outside Gandhi’s house in Ahmednagar on Tuesday.
