Chennai comes forward to extend support to Anna Hazare

People hold cut-outs of Anna Hazare and shout slogans during a protest against corruption.

Support for Anna Hazare is slowly gaining momentum in Tamil Nadu with more people coming forward to express solidarity with the Gandhian waging a war against corruption.

Kollywood has begun to lend support to the movement and Kamal Haasan was the first come out in the open. In his appeal, he expressed hope that people power will bring about change.

Actor politico Sarat Kumar and a few other film personalities visited the protest venue and pledged their support to the protest in the city, which witnessed the ranks of the protesters swelling into hundreds.

So far 4900 people had registered to participate in the relay fast, while 55 were on an indefinite fast. There was no courting arrest on Wednesday.

Youth outnumbered the elderly and others. While government servants too have taken part, they prefer to hide their identity.

"Support is clearly growing and it is visible," says Bhavna Upadyaya, IAC coordinator. "A candle light vigil is planned and the protest would be round the clock," she added.

Meanwhile, IIT students took out a silent march within the campus that culminated in a candle light vigil. Some 1,000 students participated in the protest.
