Bedi’s antics leave supporters in splits, politicians fuming

Former IPS officer Kiran Bedi, now a key associate of Anna Hazare, and actor Om Puri, spat fire on politicians and ridiculed elections, speaking from the stage in Ramlila Maidan. Bedi accused politicians of “wearing several masks at the same time and telling lies all the time,” while actor Om Puri, another supporter of Anna said politicians behaved like “illiterates”.

Congress parliamentary party secretary Sanjay Nirupam said the remarks amounted to breach of privilege. “We are deliberating on how to respond”.

Bedi also ridiculed and rejected electoral politics of the country that she said has been “duping people for the last 60 years”. “Why do you go and queue up at the polling booths? Are we cattle? Why do we trust them? They say one thing here and one thing in Parliament,” she said.

Pointing at two BJP leaders, Gopinath Munde and Ananth Kumar, present there, she said, “Look at them. They say one thing here and one thing outside.”

Bedi then moved on to theatrics and enacted what she said was how politicians behaved. Bedi pulled a scarf from the neck of a young activist on stage, wrapped her head with it and proceeded to mock MPs. “You remove one mask, then you find another one, and then another. They change words according to time and place. Never trust them,” she said.

Puri went on to seek an aptitude test for elected representatives. “These people should be judged through an exam on general knowledge about India. If any one fails to secure 60% marks in the exam, he/she should not be given a ticket to contest an election,” Puri said.

Last week Bedi had said, “Anna is India and India is Anna,” a statement that her colleagues Prashant Bhushan and Arvind Kejriwal had to disassociate from subsequently.
