Anna supporters erupt in joy


BHUBANESWAR: Hundreds of supporters of Anna Hazare on Saturday celebrated "victory" by dancing on the streets amid loud cheers across the state after the anti-corruption crusader announced at Ramlila Maidan that the government had given in before the demands of people.

Emotions ran high as the protestors raised the pitch of their voice to mark the "historic" occasion. The mood on Mahatma Gandhi Marg in Bhubaneswar changed from protest to that of celebrations within moments. While hundreds of civil society members, including children, students and women, celebrated the day.

"We have won. People have won. August 27 would be remembered as anti-corruption day in the history of the nation," said NisiKant Mahapatra, a member of the India Against Corruption group.

The anti-corruption brigades decided to celebrate Holi a day on Sunday. "We will play colours at the main agitation ground on Mahatma Gandhi Marg on Sunday to mark the rare moment in history," said Mahapatra, adding the civil society members would take a victory motorcycle rally after that.

A sense of victory and jubilation has already set in the mood of the protestors after confirmation that the Parliament had passed a resolution conveying the sense of the House on Lok Pal Bill.

"Anna Hazare zindabad," Inclab jindabad, "Bharat mata ki jai" and "durniti aau rahiba nahi (there won't be any corruption anymore) filled the air.

Describing the development as the second freedom struggle, Satyabrata Dash, a student, said, "The historic moment has changed India for once and all."

Reports reaching here from Cuttack and Sambalpur said the revelers distributed sweets and wished each other on the "win against corruption." People took out victory march in Balangir, Bargarh and Berhampur as well. "The celebrations will continue for next few days," said Satyabrata Dash, a student.

Two of the protestors, Raj Narayan Jena and Bhabani Parija announced to end their fast after Anna appealed the protestors across the nation to terminate their hunger strike.
