Anna Hazare effect: Himachal to bring in new anti-graft law

Shimla, Apr 8 : The anti-corruption crusade by social activist Anna Hazare today inspired Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal to say that a new anti-graft legsilation will be brought before the state Assembly in its next session



In a statement in the House, Mr Dhumal said current laws are not adequate to tackle the menace of corruption.

The Bill, to be moved in the Monsoon Session, would have the provision to compound the property being amassed unlawfully so that the state could be free from the curse of corruption, he added.

Despite the fact that cases have been registered in the past the law fails to address the menace adequately, he said noting that accused and their wards have been using the wealth amassed through unlawful means after taking advantage due to infirmity in the graft laws.

Mr Dhumal pointed out that MLAs showed their concern over this issue during the current session and the matter has figured in the Assembly from both sides.

Terming the issue burning problem of the day, the Chief Minister said a number of scams like 2G, Commonwealth games, Adarsh housing society, Hassan Ali and black money stashed in foreign banks, purchase of defence equipment and Edible Product import or Export emerged during recent days.

He said that issue of appointment of CVC followed by its quashing by Supreme Court has posed many questions on the existing graft laws which needed to be redrafted.

Anti-corruption laws, he said, could not be able to check on political and administrative level.

Welfare scheme in the name of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi MGNREGA has, he said become the symbol of nationwide corruption.

Calling upon the members not to politicise the issue, Mr Dhumal expressed government resolve to bring state legislation to eradicate the menace.

He said India is rated among the most corrupt nations.
